A Dazzling Light Display

#12

I’m not sure there could be anything better than the Northern Lights on the shores of Lake Huron. Between 11:30PM until 1:00AM, I was around the Rogers City area photographing the event, with a focus on the shoreline. I was somewhat unsure if any of the photos were going to turn out because of the 30 mile per hour wind gusts that may have shaken the camera, but luckily it didn’t… Another image is after the break!

However, the wind sure did cause a mini-sandstorm on the beach, which was somewhat annoying. Even with the wind and sandstorm, nothing could ever ruin a stunning Northern Lights display! Tom O’Hare from 9&10 News kept me up to date with the cloud cover forecast, which slowly filtered in from the east. Also, you may see two orange lights seemingly floating in the middle of Lake Huron, I believe those are the lights on the Mackinaw Bridge. The 30 second long exposure had no problem picking them up.

By 3AM I was completely tired out and called it quits for the night. This aurora event was certainly the strongest since last September’s. Keep in mind that 2012 is expected to be very active with geomagnetic storms just like this one, so if you missed the light show you will have another chance soon enough!

Stunning. How far away is the bridge?

Thanks Scott, the bridge is about 55 miles away from where I was standing on the beach.

I live 3 blocks from here! My favorite place in the world. Am interested in this print, wondering if it is able to be a stretched canvas?
